The INGENIUM 

Lat. (in - jeen - yüm) ; syn. ingenious, clever, clever device

The word INGENIUM is Latin. Roughly translated, it means “to have created something clever” or “clever device”. Among engineers, it is not common knowledge that the word ENGINEERING and its root ENGINE also originated from INGENIUM. The engine as a clever device does make sense… truly ingenious!

Now formally out as the University of the Philippines Alumni Engineers’ Digest, INGENIUM is one level up for the UPAE Yearbook. It is inspired by the warm reception of the 2006 Yearbook—our first attempt to step into the editorial shoes of Prof. Ilio, our consummate engineer cum literary giant. He taught us the power of imagination for innovation, but also the power of the printed page. We now reinvent this Yearbook— now a Digest complete with a name, INGENIUM.  Aptly, its launching this year coincides with celebrating UPAE’s 60th birthday and with solidly organizing our association; starting with renovating our office, on to rebuilding our membership database, to renewing our legal papers acknowledging our existence— it is a rebirth of sorts; a renaissance, indeed.

INGENIUM is envisioned to develop into a coffee table book of premium design, prestigious in nature. We start with a modest maiden issue. In time, it will be a treasure of UPAE chronicles, of literary works, moving editorials, outstanding thesis papers, technological innovations, as well as memorabilia of and by the UP Engineering Alumni Community. It pays homage to the alumni who have contributed to the development of our country and globally in the field of Engineering. It writes just about everything a UP Engineer holds dear.

INGENIUM from cover to cover will prove its use long after the Alumni Homecoming event, making it of more value. Starting with this year’s edition at Vol.1, it will become a catalog of information and reference. And as foreseen, it will grow into an essential reading material not only for nostalgia tripping, but also for boosting the engineering profession. It is for looking back and moving forward.

INGENIUM will also have élan, making it reader worthy. As a balance, not only are the articles of notable content, each page is a visual delight as well.  Art direction of high aesthetics is realized through photography portraiture, photo-essays, not to mention the use of fine stock photography, graphic design and layout; that sets it apart most especially because it equates to what every accomplished UP Engineering Alumni is worth, both in premium substance and prestige.
